Leigh Centurions secured safe passage through to round four of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a ten try victory over Whitehaven amateur side Wath Brow Hornets. Dave Alstead was the Leigh hero, on his 99th appearance, scoring four tries while there were also good displays from Ricky Bibey and Tommy Goulden.
The Hornets gave their all but whereas other professional sides struggled against amateur opposition, Leigh finished comfortably.
Wath Brow scored first through winger Peter Caddy after Scott Teare raced through the middle of the Leigh defence but tries from Tommy Goulden and Dave Alstead put Leigh into a 12-4 lead. The Hornets defence then stood firm for 22 minutes before further tries from Nick Stanton - a glorious 60 metre individual effort, and Alstead, and three goals from the boot of Mick Nanyn made it 22-4 at half-time.
Nanyn scored the first of six second half Leigh tries within three minutes before Hill ran under the posts for his second try in two games. Alstead (2) and Goulden finished good approachwork from Martyn Ridyard, who bossed the second half and also linked with Steve Maden to get Nanyn over for his second try before the big centre struck his sixth goal to complete a 52-4 win and a personal twenty point haul.
