Learning Through Sports Programme

The Learning through Sports Programme welcomes pupils from local primary schools into the Stadium for a fun-filled day. The Programme is a numeracy and healthy living day based around rugby and working life at Leigh Centurions. The pupils visit various departments during their tour of the ground solving numeracy problems.

They also spend time in the changing rooms where they learn about life as a rugby player and the importance of keeping fit. Pupils then take part in their own training session on the pitch.

Aimhigher With The Centurions

Aimhigher is a national initiative to raise levels of participation in higher education. It aims to work together with varying partners to set up a range of activities which will encourage more people to consider entering higher education and help them to succeed in gaining a place. Their task is to encourage more people to apply to enter higher education and to help them succeed in gaining a place. Aimhigher works to increase social inclusion by encouraging learners to take advantage of higher level education.

The programme aims to give local young adults (year 10 pupils) from St Mary's Catholic High, Bedford High and Westleigh High an insight into the workings of the professional Rugby League club and its product-a matchday.

Over the course of the 8 week programme with Leigh Centurions participants experience various different marketing activities that staff at the club would usually undertake for each matchday. Such activities include, designing a matchday poster, designing a media package for the matchday and design and implementation of all matchday entertainment all within a budget. The organisation of a Leigh Centurions matchday is really what sets the programme apart from all other Aimhigher projects.

The success of the programme over the last four years has been immense with around 60% of pupils going onto Further and/or Higher Education, and testament to this was the Community Department winning the Key innovator award at the Aimhigher Awards in 2007.

RLLA Courses In High Schools

The aim of the RLLA course is for students to have responsibility to develop their own independent learning, volunteering and leadership skills and teachers needing to ensure that we are not only providing a performance pathway but also opportunities to experience the roles of coaches, match officials and administrators.

The length of the course is fifteen hours consisting of Introduction, Coaching Method, Practical sessions, Match Officials and Festival Organisation. In addition pupils should also expect to do a further five hours involvement in the delivery of coaching within primary schools and running of the festival itself.

By the end of the program all pupils should be able to plan, organise and deliver a coaching session, referee a modified game and organise a rugby league festival. Therefore, High school pupils in the area undergo the course and then deliver festivals to their high schools Primary school cohorts as part of the course.
